What is SAP Joule?
Joule is a proprietary AI assistant developed by SAP, based on generative artificial intelligence (AI). It comprehends the business context and aims to fundamentally alter the efficiency of company processes. It aspires to be a co-pilot for businesses, delivering precise responses based on real scenarios. Integrated directly into applications for critical business processes, Joule aims to noticeably streamline employees’ daily work.
Advantages of the SAP Joule AI Assistant
The AI assistant leverages SAP’s core competency in connecting modern technology with business processes. Its advantage lies in not only understanding queries and directives from employees but also grasping the business context. Joule swiftly retrieves data from various systems and establishes connections, delivering intelligent insights in a short timeframe and thereby enabling time savings for employees. This makes work more efficient.
Where is SAP Joule used?
The SAP Joule AI Assistant is intended to be integrated into SAP’s entire cloud portfolio, including:
- Human Resources (HR)
- Finance
- Supply Chain Management (SCM): value chains and supply chains
- Procurement
- Customer Experience
- SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP)
Employees across all SAP solutions should be able to request and query data. The AI assistant will be gradually made available for all SAP applications in the coming months but will only be accessible in the cloud, not on-premise.
How can Joule facilitate work?
Within SAP SuccessFactors, Joule is expected to enhance the employee experience by enabling users to find information faster and perform HR-related tasks more efficiently, such as clocking in and out or approving and rejecting requests.
For example, the SAP Joule AI Assistant can analyse employee turnover in a company and suggest solutions for improving satisfaction. Joule can also assist in creating unbiased job descriptions or formulating appropriate interview questions.

What data does SAP’s AI train with?
With Joule, you can ask questions and give instructions via voice command. The AI assistant answers queries using information from various corporate data, images, and texts from SAP systems. Third-party sources are also employed. Unlike the American software ChatGPT, SAP’s AI bot does not use internet data but primarily relies on proprietary data from SAP software. Joule is built on a language model created by SAP itself, designed for use with business data for security and privacy reasons. According to Chief Technology Officer Thomas Saueressig, SAP does not use customer data to train the language model.
As per the company, over 26,000 SAP customers from the cloud are currently using the SAP Business AI. The new AI assistant Joule is based on these existing offerings and provides additional advanced features. SAP plans to establish a future-proof AI system for businesses, collaborating with other companies specialising in AI.
When will SAP Joule be available?
Joule is expected to be initially available for SAP SuccessFactors and SAP Start by the end of 2023. In early 2024, this AI assistant will be available with the SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition application. Subsequently, SAP Customer Experience and SAP Ariba solutions, along with the SAP Business Technology Platform, will be added to the application scope.
What can the SAP AI Assistant do?
With Joule, SAP addresses one of the most significant megatrends of our time: Artificial Intelligence. This assistant, based on generative artificial intelligence and natural language processing, has the potential to fundamentally change the business operations of companies.
By enabling employees to ask questions and solve problems using natural language, Joule can open new dimensions for the utilisation of business data. Whether in areas like sales optimisation or human resources, Joule can help companies make informed decisions. The introduction of the SAP Joule AI Assistant is a crucial milestone for the competitiveness and future readiness of SAP solutions.
